For most of these operating systems two types of driver are available: Virtual COM Port (VCP) drivers and direct (D2XX) drivers. The VCP driver emulates a standard PC serial port such that the USB device may be communicated with as a standard RS232 device. The D2XX driver allows direct access to a USB device via a DLL interface.

Awesome!! One of the only serial to USB adapters out there with status lights. Makes it very easy to trouble and diagnose serial data issues and pin configurations. Also works out-of-the-box on Win 7 x64 with no need to install additional drivers. Thanks for the great product!!
My computer uses the 64-bit version of Windows 7. When I plugged the adapter in, the OS recognized it and downloaded the drivers via Windows update. It defaulted to COM7, so I changed it to COM1 and connected it to the PLC. I auto-configured a DF1 channel in RSLinx Classic and immediately discovered it using RSWho.
It works where others failI used this to connect my laptop to stepper motor drivers which require serial input to change settings. Two other adapters failed and this one worked straight away with no tweaking.

Hand controls manufactured since April 2016 have a USB port on the bottom which provides an interface for your Windows, Mac or Linux PC/laptop. This port is actually a connection to a USB to serial adapter inside the hand control. As such, once you connect to it, your computer will have a serial port that your astronomy software will interface with. Windows, Mac and Linux will all require a driver to create this serial port. Once the driver is installed, a serial port, designated by a number, will be present on your computer. Configure your astronomy software to connect to this port.
In some cases, once you connect your PC/laptop to the hand control, a driver will be automatically loaded. If so, a serial port will then be present on your PC/laptop. If you do not find a serial port present after making this connection, you should manually load the driver.
The adapter inside the hand control uses a Prolific PL2303 chipset. You can search at the Prolific website and download drivers from either of these locations (unfortunately Prolific's website is a mess so there is no telling where they might put the drivers as they post updates: 2ff7e9595c
