Matlahuayl SMR covers just over one square mile from shore to depths greater than 330 feet, protecting a mix of sandy beaches, rocky intertidal areas, surfgrass beds, rocky reefs, sea caves, and submarine canyon habitat. San Diego-Scripps Coastal SMCA covers just under 1 square miles from shore to depths greater than 360 feet, protecting a mix of rocky shoreline, sandy beaches, rocky reefs, and submarine canyon habitat. Both MPAs support unique and diverse marine communities.

Birds can be seen along the shoreline, including sandpipers, egrets, whimbrels, and brown pelicans. The tidepools teem with periwinkle snails, striped shore crabs, acorn barnacles, chitons, and limpets. Offshore, the rocky reefs and kelp forests support large populations of lingcod, white seabass, and leopard sharks. These sharks, which are generally harmless to humans and can grow up to six feet in length, gather in massive numbers each summer and fall in La Jolla Cove, within the SMR, and are an attraction for visitors who snorkel in the shallow water. Sanddabs, halibut, bat rays, round stingrays, shovelnose guitarfish, thornback rays, and baitfish can be found patrolling the sandy seafloor and large beds of surfgrass that hide crustaceans and invertebrates.
This marine protected area (MPA) is fed by cold, nutrient-rich waters, which help to sustain a diverse web of marine life. Its sandy beaches and rocky shores transform to sandy and rocky seafloor beneath the surface, supporting eelgrass beds and dense kelp forests. Halfmoon, blacksmith, Pacific sardine, kelp bass and California sheephead swim through the kelp while California spiny lobster, sheep crab, and warty sea cucumber crawl along the sandy and rocky seafloor. Seasonally migrating yellowtail, barracuda, and bonito can be found in the open waters farther offshore, and marine mammals like California sea lions and harbor seals visit frequently.
Located about 20 miles off Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the Channel Islands, and features extremely diverse coastal and terrestrial habitats. The island's coastline is marked with steep cliffs, gigantic sea caves, coves, and sandy beaches. The rocky shoreline provides habitat for seabirds, like pelagic cormorants and California brown pelicans, and refuge for urchins and California mussels. The seafloor here includes a mix of sand and gravel with some patchy reefs and high-relief pinnacles. Eelgrass beds are found in the shallow sand and mud, while forests of giant kelp attach to rocky areas, providing shelter for kelp bass, lingcod, and cabezon.
A rocky shoreline extends from Cavern Point to Potato Harbor in the SMR, but the sandy beach at Scorpion Anchorage makes for easy access. Visitors can enjoy popular water sports such as kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Kayakers can explore the nearshore waters filled with kelp forests, fish, and seabirds, and the island's rugged coastline, featuring caverns and rock arches. Divers and snorkelers can expect to see eelgrass meadows, feather boa kelp, surfgrass, giant kelp, urchins, nudibranchs, California sheephead and cabezon. Since no amenities are available on the island, visitors should bring water, sun protection, and other supplies. No fishing or other take of marine resources is allowed within the SMR or FMR.
Alkalinity of Urine. Urine in storage can reach a pH of 9.0. Although 9.0 would be too basic for most crops, urine would only raise the pH of soil very slightly, since the soil buffers its effect. The addition of urine might even benefit soil pH, since many soils (especially in the humid tropics) tend towards acidity. The change in pH would be most dramatic in sandy soils with low amounts of organic matter.
Like many garden and house plants, bamboo thrives in loamy, well-drained soil. This type of soil combines sand, silt and clay in roughly equal amounts, which retains moisture without waterlogging. Air pockets allow bamboo roots and rhizomes beneath the soil surface to remain oxygenated, while the soil's water retention prevents drought stress and the loam holds onto nutrients better than sandy soil would.
